WHAT IS OYSTER SAUCE?

Oyster sauce is a savory, slightly sweet sauce traditionally used throughout Chinese and other Asian cuisines. It adds umami, richness and depth without making food taste strongly of oysters.

It is particularly useful in stir-fries because a relatively small amount can season meat, vegetables and sauce at the same time.

FAQ
Is Wok Mei Oyster Sauce gluten-free?
Yes. Wok Mei Oyster Sauce is gluten-free, making it an alternative to many traditional oyster sauces that contain wheat-based ingredients.

Does Wok Mei Oyster Sauce contain MSG?
Wok Mei Oyster Sauce is made without added MSG.

What does oyster sauce taste like?
Oyster sauce has a rich, savory flavor with a touch of sweetness and plenty of umami. Wok Mei is formulated to add depth without overpowering the natural flavors of the meat, seafood or vegetables in the dish.

Does oyster sauce make food taste like oysters?
Not strongly. Oyster sauce contributes savory depth and umami rather than an obvious seafood taste. That is one reason it works so well with beef, chicken, pork and vegetables as well as seafood.

How much oyster sauce should I use?
For a typical stir-fry serving several people, start with one or two tablespoons, taste, and add more if needed. Because oyster sauce is concentrated, it is generally better to begin with a small amount.

Can I use Wok Mei Oyster Sauce as a marinade?
Absolutely. Oyster sauce works particularly well in marinades for beef, chicken and pork and can be combined with garlic, ginger, sesame oil and other Asian seasonings.

Is Wok Mei Oyster Sauce only for Chinese cooking?
No. Oyster sauce is widely used in Chinese cooking but also works beautifully in Thai, Vietnamese and other Asian-inspired dishes—and anywhere you want to add savory umami flavor.
